Disability Confident is about encouraging employers to think differently about disability and to consider how they improve the way they recruit, retain and develop disabled people. Employers can become part of the Disability Confident Scheme, which has 3 levels of membership designed to support employers in demonstrating their commitment to changing attitudes, behaviours and cultures in relation to disabled people. Members receive accreditation when they join the scheme which includes a certificate and Disability Confident badge to display on their website and recruitment materials.

Working collaboratively, Disability Confident and CIPD recently produced a practical guide for managers - Recruiting, managing and developing people with a disability or health condition. The guide takes an inclusive approach to employing disabled people and people with long term health conditions. It aims to help managers:

  • Attract the most suitable candidates to their organisation by considering potential barriers that might exist before commencing the recruitment process.
  • Be confident about managing and supporting employees with a disability or long term health condition from recruitment, making the appointment, development and retention within their organisation.
  • Understand, identify and reduce barriers that could limit a disabled person or person with a long term health condition reach their full potential.
  • Understand the law relating to disability in the workplace and consider reasonable adjustments.
  • Support an inclusive work environment.
